In an interview on ‘Today’ with Matt Lauer, Elton John discussed his drug addiction, his “lucky” escape from acquiring HIV/AIDS, and his son Zachary among other things. The most interesting part of the interview, set to broadcast on July 17th and 18th, is his conversation about his son’s ‘heartbreaking’ reality of not having a mom. The singer adds it will be, “…heartbreaking for him to grow up and realize he hasn’t got a mommy. But he’s so happy. I’ve never seen a more contented child. And you have never seen two more contented people as David and I.” John and his husband David Furnish welcomed their son, Zachary, via a surrogate in December 201o. Reports claim the couple is planning to have another child via the same surrogate, an unknown woman in California, some time this summer. Both men donated their sperm for Zachary’s birth “so we don’t know which one of us is the father” the couple said.
The couple worries their son will be bullied because of his gay fathers. David said: “He’s going to be potentially doubly stigmatized because one of his parents is extremely famous and because he comes from two dads. We’ve taken advice from counselors. We’ve also put a whole scrapbook together about his creation, the people who were involved in the process and how the intent was about love.” He added: “We’re going to raise him to be proud of who he is.”
