Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney believes that if he wins Michigan in the Presidential election, he will become President. Romney is currently in Michigan with his wife, Anne, campaigning.
“If I am lucky enough to be elected president, I’ll be the first president in American history to have been born in Michigan, ” he told crowd at Bavarian Inn Lodge.
Although Romney was the governor of Massachusetts, he was born in Michigan and raised in the Detroit suburbs. His father, George Romney, ran a car company and was also the governor of Michigan. George Romney failed to win the Republican presidential nomination in 1968.
President Barack Obama won Michigan in 2008 so it is certainly very ambitious of Romney to even attempt to make it a focal point of his campaign. Because Michigan has a strong Democratic base, Romney will have to explain his opposition to federal support for GM and Chrysler.
