Religious Conflict in Nigeria Causes Dozens of Deaths

More than 50 people are dead in Kaduna, Nigeria after riots that are believed to be caused by religious differences.

Nigeria is the world’s largest equal mix of Christians and Muslims and the two groups have historically not been able to make peace with each other.¬† The deadly riots are reported to have been started¬† by three suicide bombings against Christian churches in northern Nigeria. Young Christians are reported to have retaliated by attacking Muslims and killing them.

The bombing of Christian churches is speculated to be attributed to Islamist sect, Boko Haram, which is against President Goodluck Jonathan’s government.

On Sunday, a 24-hour curfew was imposed by the Kaduna state government and this has reduced the unrest that has been going on.

Many people are hoping that this is not the beginning of a much wider sectarian conflict in Nigeria.
